Add hline with population median for each facet
You could create an extra column in dt
for median per facet.
library(dplyr) # With dplyr for example
dt <- dt %>% group_by(gr) %>%
mutate(med = median(y))
# Rerun ggplot line with yintercept = med
ggplot(dt, aes(x = as.factor(id), y = y)) +
geom_boxplot() +
facet_wrap(~ gr) +
geom_hline(aes(yintercept = med, group = gr), colour = 'red')
If you don't want to add a new column with the computed median, you can add a geom_smooth
using a quantile regression :
library(ggplot2)
library(quantreg)
set.seed(1234)
dt <- data.frame(gr = rep(1:2, each = 500),
id = rep(1:5, 2, each = 100),
y = c(rnorm(500, mean = 0, sd = 1),
rnorm(500, mean = 1, sd = 2)))
ggplot(dt, aes(y = y)) +
geom_boxplot(aes(x = as.factor(id))) +
geom_smooth(aes(x = id), method = "rq", formula = y ~ 1, se = FALSE) +
facet_wrap(~ gr)
