Example 1: install npm ubuntu

sudo apt update
sudo apt install nodejs
sudo apt install npm

Example 2: install nodejs latest version ubuntu

//STEP 1:install using curl (PPA)
sudo apt update && sudo apt install curl -y
//STEP 2:install latest version (replace 14.x with requird one(i.e 15.x))
curl -sL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_15.x | sudo -E bash -
sudo apt install nodejs
nodejs -v
v15.3.0

Example 3: ubuntu 18 install nodejs

cd ~
curl -sL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_12.x -o nodesource_setup.sh
sudo bash nodesource_setup.sh
sudo apt install nodejs
nodejs -v # shows your version
