Upgraded to GNOME 3 and no desktop icons showing

Open the gnome-tweak-tool and navigate to the desktop tab as shown in the picture below and activate 'Show Icons'. If you don't have gnome-tweak-tool installed you can install it by opening a terminal and typing:

sudo apt install gnome-tweak-tool
