Example 1: only keep rows of a dataframe based on a column value

df.loc[df['column_name'] == some_value]

Example 2: filter by row contains pandas

In [3]: df[df['ids'].str.contains("ball")]  # removes all rows where 'ball' not in row['ids']
Out[3]:
     ids  vals
0  aball     1
1  bball     2
3  fball     4

Example 3: pandas filter rows by value

# does year equals to 2002?
# is_2002 is a boolean variable with True or False in it
>is_2002 =  gapminder['year']==2002
