Re-color Tooltip in Bootstrap 4

Simple use of this code in your CSS file.

.tooltip-inner {
background-color: #00cc00;
}
.tooltip.bs-tooltip-right .arrow:before {
    border-right-color: #00cc00 !important;
}
.tooltip.bs-tooltip-left .arrow:before {
    border-left-color: #00cc00 !important;
}
.tooltip.bs-tooltip-bottom .arrow:before {
    border-bottom-color: #00cc00 !important;
}
.tooltip.bs-tooltip-top .arrow:before {
    border-top-color: #00cc00 !important;
}

As of Bootstrap 4.0

CSS for tooltip recoloring is handled by the .tooltip-inner class as you noticed:

.tooltip-inner {
    max-width: 200px;
    padding: 3px 8px;
    color: #fff;
    text-align: center;
    background-color: #000;
    border-radius: .25rem;
}

Css for top arrow:

.tooltip.bs-tooltip-auto[x-placement^=top] .arrow::before, .tooltip.bs-tooltip-top .arrow::before {
    margin-left: -3px;
    content: "";
    border-width: 5px 5px 0;
    border-top-color: #000;
}

Css for right arrow:

.tooltip.bs-tooltip-auto[x-placement^=right] .arrow::before, .tooltip.bs-tooltip-right .arrow::before {
    margin-top: -3px;
    content: "";
    border-width: 5px 5px 5px 0;
    border-right-color: #000;
}

Css for bottom arrow:

.tooltip.bs-tooltip-auto[x-placement^=bottom] .arrow::before, .tooltip.bs-tooltip-bottom .arrow::before {
    margin-left: -3px;
    content: "";
    border-width: 0 5px 5px;
    border-bottom-color: #000;
}

Css for left arrow:

.tooltip.bs-tooltip-auto[x-placement^=left] .arrow::before, .tooltip.bs-tooltip-left .arrow::before {
    right: 0;
    margin-top: -3px;
    content: "";
    border-width: 5px 0 5px 5px;
    border-left-color: #000;
}

Using a custom style for each tooltip

The BS4 solutions above work but they all change the tooltip style globally. All tooltips will look the same. It would be much sweeter to use a custom style for each tooltip, e.g. like for the alert boxes. I have no idea why the BS team did not provide that feature for tooltips off the shelf.

Hello, data-container

There is a rather simple solution making use of the container option that the BS tooltip provides. With this option you can append the tooltip element to another specific element. So you can wrap the tooltip into another element and append it to it via the data-container attribute like this:

<span class="wrapper"><a href="#" data-toggle="tooltip" data-container=".wrapper" title="Some tooltip text!">Hover over me</a></span>

Now you can use the wrapper element to style the tooltip inside it inividually. For example, you want a tooltip in "danger" style. This would be the HTML:

<span class="tooltip-danger"><a href="#" data-toggle="tooltip" data-container=".tooltip-danger" title="Some tooltip text!">Hover over me</a></span>

And this would be the stylesheet:

.tooltip-danger .tooltip-inner {
   color: #721c24;
   background-color: #f8d7da;
   border: 1px solid #721c24;
}
.tooltip-danger .tooltip.bs-tooltip-top .arrow:before {
   border-top-color: #721c24;
}
.tooltip-danger .tooltip.bs-tooltip-right .arrow:before {
   border-right-color: #721c24;
}
.tooltip-danger .tooltip.bs-tooltip-bottom .arrow:before {
   border-bottom-color: #721c24;
}
.tooltip-danger .tooltip.bs-tooltip-left .arrow:before {
   border-left-color: #721c24;
}

That will look like this:

Tooltip in "danger" style

Another tooltip on the same page could look like this:

Tooltip in "success" style

You get the idea...

The Stylesheet

And since I have been through it already, here are my tooltip styles based on the BS4 alert styles:
